Why Review the COSEL Range

COSEL has specialized in power supplies for decades, and it offers a broad range across AC-DC supplies, DC-DC converters and EMI filters, so a designer can source the whole power chain from one supplier. The datasheets give the numbers, but the datasheet only tells part of the story. This review examines the supplies, the converters and the filters from the perspective of an FAE who supports customers through selection and validation, focusing on the reliability, the derating, the isolation and the EMC.

The AC-DC Supplies

The COSEL PBA series is a long-established enclosed range from about 10 W to 1500 W, with a universal input of about 85 V to 264 V AC, an adjustable output, an operating LED, protection for over-current and over-voltage and a harmonic attenuator that meets the IEC 61000-3-2 requirement. On the bench the output stayed stable across the load, the efficiency matched the datasheet and the unit derated as the ambient rose, which is the mark of a well-specified supply. The convection units suit a quiet or a sealed panel and the fan-cooled units suit a higher load, so the range covers a wide set of applications.

Reliability and Derating

The strength of the PBA range is its proven reliability: the units run for years in industrial and telecom equipment, and the derating curve is honest, so a designer who keeps thermal margin gets a long life. A supply that runs at a lower fraction of its rating runs cooler, and a cooler supply fails less, which is the practical reason to over-size by a modest amount.

The DC-DC Converters

The COSEL CBS open-frame and ZUS board-mount converters give an isolated rail from a DC bus, so a board is protected and a ground loop is broken. On the bench the output was clean across the load, the isolation held and the converters derated as the datasheet shows, and the open-frame part spread its heat into the host board as expected. The range covers the tens of watts and the single-digit watts, so a designer can power a board rail or a small interface from the same supplier.

Isolation and the Board Rail

The isolated output is the practical benefit, because it separates the board from the bus and lets each card derive its own rail in a distributed power system. Confirm the isolation rating and respect it in the layout, since a trace across the barrier defeats the design.

The EMI Filters

COSEL offers the NAC general-purpose filter and the EAC filter with a defined attenuation from about 150 kHz to 1 MHz and a set of safety certifications, both in single-phase 250 V AC and DC with a range of currents and line-to-ground capacitor codes. On the bench the filters attenuated the conducted noise as expected when they were installed close to the connector with the case bonded to the chassis, and the capacitor code set the leakage as described. The filter is a small part that turns a noisy supply into a compliant design.

Leakage and Safety

The line-to-ground capacitor code sets the leakage, so a medical or a sensitive application chooses a code within the safety limit while still meeting the attenuation. The trade between the leakage and the attenuation is the key selection decision, and the range covers it.

Verdict

The COSEL range earns its reputation. The PBA supplies give a rugged, well-specified AC-DC conversion with a wide range and a proven reliability, the CBS and ZUS converters give a clean isolated rail for a board, and the NAC and EAC filters finish the EMC design. BeiLuo holds the mainstream models in regional stock and ships them with an import declaration, a certificate of origin and a RoHS compliance file, so you can evaluate a sample and move to production without a supply gap.
